In 1898, Annie Besant, an Indian Home Rule activist and theosophist, founded Central Hindu College, which was later incorporated by the university. With the backing of the maharajas of Darbhanga Rameshwar Singh and Benares Prabhu Narayan Singh, as well as the lawyer Sunder Lal, Madan Mohan Malaviya founded the university following the marginalization of Besant and her associates. BHU is the biggest residential university in Asia, housing 18,000 of its 30,000+ students on campus.
